Another winter storm will make its way through Minnesota tonight and Tuesday. Fergus Falls is expected to get three to seven inches of snow with winds ten to 15 miles per hour. Monday’s high will be 22 degrees and on Tuesday, the high will be a mere 8 degrees. The Grand Forks, ND area is expected to break its all-time December snowfall record after this storm passes!

DNR sending survey to boat owners about dock rules
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is conducting a survey that the agency hopes will help make up future rules for docks and boatlifts. The 27-question survey is being sent out to boat owners and is asked to be returned by January 19th. The DNR will use survey results and comments from public meetings to make decisions on rules for docks and boatlifts that are on the state’s lakes, rivers and streams. In 2010, new rules regarding docks and boatlifts are expected to take effect.
Walgreens to slow expansion plans; Fergus Falls store still opening
Walgreens reported first-quarter earnings on Monday that fell short of expectations. Even though reported earnings fell short, store sales rose 6.6%. The company also announced that it is planning on significantly slowing expansion. Despite that announcement, the Fergus Falls Walgreens is still on track to open on West Lincoln Avenue sometime in early 2009. In total, Walgreens will open around 475 stores by August 2009 – which is the end of the company’s fiscal year.
Fergus Falls to lose $320,315 in state aid
The City of Fergus Falls learned that it will lose $320,315.00 in state aid after Governor Tim Pawlenty released his plans to balance the state’s budget. In addition, Otter Tail County will also lose $476,349. Almost every city in Minnesota will receive 22 percent less money than they expected this month. In total, cities in Minnesota will lose $66 million and counties will lose $44 million. Cities with less than 1,000 residents, such as Battle Lake, Dalton and Underwood will not lose any state aid. More cuts may need to be made in early 2009, but not have been announced yet. Governor Pawlenty did not make cuts to the military, veterans, public safety and K-12 education programs.
Broen Memorial Home recieves five-star Medicare quality rating
Nursing homes in Fergus Falls, Battle Lake and Breckenridge all rated high in a report released by Medicare this week. Broen Memorial Home, in Fergus Falls, received an overall 5 out of 5 star rating which was the highest overall grade given to a nursing home in our area. St. Francis in Breckenridge and Golden Living Center in Battle Lake both received a 4 out of 5 star rating. The lowest overall scoring nursing home in our area, Pioneer Care Center, received 3 out of 5 stars. Medicare determined each nursing home’s rating by conducting health inspections, seeing staffing hours and reviewing quality measures.

Marching Band accepting donations online for DC trip
The Fergus Falls High School Marching Band is now accepting donations online to help with the expenses for when they participate in the Inaugural Parade for President Elect Barack Obama on January 20th, 2009 in Washington DC. Taxpayers protected if CDG, RTC deal falls apart
Taxpayers in the city of Fergus Falls will be protected if the Campus Development Group’s project to develop the Regional Treatment Center falls apart. If the Campus Development Group is unable to open the planned college, they’ll be required to develop part of the property into marketable space in a prescribed time frame. If nothing happens during that time period, the grant agreement with the State of Minnesota would still be available for demolition.
On December 15th, during the next City Council meeting, final agreements between the Campus Development Group and the City of Fergus Falls regarding the Regional Treatment Center are expected to be signed.
Oil executive predicts $1 gas in early 2009
Joe Petrowski, CEO of Gulf Oil in Massachusetts, predicts that the price of a gallon of gasoline will be a dollar in early 2009 and that the price of a barrel would be around $20. According to Petrowski, “…oil never should have gone to $147, but it did and it can.”. A gallon of gas was $1.64 on Sunday in Fergus Falls down from $1.74 on Saturday.
17 year olds steal, crash Perham-Dent school vehicle
Two 17 year-old boys stole a pick-up that was owned by the Perham-Dent school district and later crashed it. The two boys drove to New York Mils and then on their way back they rolled the vehicle while going 85 miles per hour. The crash happened at around 7PM on Tuesday. Prosecutors are expected to be filing auto theft charges.
